Rocksprings High School UIL Academics Kicks Off Season with First Meet in Big Lake

Posted Date: 01/31/26 (10:57 AM)

The Rocksprings High School UIL Academic team is hitting the ground running (literally and figuratively😂) this season, traveling to Big Lake, Texas today for their very first academic meet of the year. With nerves and excitement alongside their calculators, computers, printers, books, etc…, our students are ready to test their skills and set the tone for what promises to be an incredible season.

This meet marks the beginning of months of preparation, practice, and competition ahead across a wide range of events. Rocksprings students will be representing the school in:
-Current Issues & Events
-Extemporaneous Speaking
-Copy Editing
-Headline Writing
-News Writing
-Feature Writing
-Editorial Writing
-Ready Writing
-Literary Criticism
-Calculator Applications
-Number Sense
-Accounting

From writing and journalism to math and business, the team is showing up with talent in every corner of UIL Academics.

None of this would be possible without the heart behind the program this year, UIL Academic Coordinator Holly Grooms, who has already proven herself to be the team’s biggest cheerleader and this year’s official chaos coordinator. Whether it’s organizing schedules, encouraging students, or keeping everything running (again both literally and figuratively), Mrs. Grooms has been the fearless leader guiding the team this year.

A huge thank-you also goes out to all the coaches who will be working with students throughout the season, helping them grow in each of these challenging events. Their time, patience, and support are what make success possible, both in competition and beyond.

Special appreciation goes to Mrs. Shelly Richardson, who is driving the team today and making sure our students arrive safely. UIL travel days are always early, busy, and a little chaotic. Her help means the world.

Rocksprings is also proud to have several returning academic standouts leading the way this season. Evelyn Romero, Kate Grooms, Coy Cottle, and Laura Martin all placed at the 2025 district meet in multiple events and are coming back to be stronger than ever.

As freshmen, Kate, Coy, and Laura advanced as regional qualifiers in 2025, and they have their sights set on returning to Brenham once again, this time in multiple events with hopes of bringing along more teammates.

With experienced leaders, passionate coaches, and a growing roster of competitors, Rocksprings UIL Academics is ready to continue its journalism and writing excellence as well as make some waves in other events this season. Today’s meet in Big Lake is just the beginning. Cheers for another UIL Academic season of learning, growth, and success.

Good luck to all of our students competing today!
